In no particular order, here are 100 mantras that I’ve compiled over the years. Most have been spoken or written by humans who inspire me, such as Kobe Bryant and JRR Tolkien, but some are from myself. They apply to training and life. Ranging from quotes to goals, thoughts to notes, here they are:
- Be Like water.
- What does it feel like when I’m running? I don’t know. Sorta feels good. I sorta stiffen up but once I get going, I like forget everything. And I sorta disappear. I can feel a change in my whole body. And I got this fire in my body. I’m just there. Flyin’. Like a bird. Like electricity. Yeah, like electricity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0tTT_87Hh8

- I run far. Very far. I go to a Dark Place and I control the pain. -Rob Krar
- Structured stress leads to positive adaptation.
- Fix your eyes on the mountain. Let the past be dead and gone. -Crowder
- There’s so much comfort in the loneliness.
- Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.
- Shut up, legs. -Jens Voigt
- Those who excel are those who maximize each moment’s creative potential.
- No miler wants to show it when the lactic acid floods in and eats away the will.
- It’s what you do in the dark that puts you in the light.
- Skill is only developed by hours and hours and hours of beating on your craft.
- Running to the death makes me feel more alive.
- Rule yourself.
- Always lead. Never follow.
- The harder is gets, the easier it becomes.
- Darkness deserves gratitude. It is the alleluia point at which we learn to understand that all growth does not take place in the sunlight.
- The highs are so elating which makes the lows so painful.
- We’re just racing time. Where’s the finish line?
- It is precious to me, though I buy it with great pain.
- Ride the wind.
- Better to burn out than fade away.
- You have to be a little crazy to accomplish greatness. If you’re not, you’re never gonna take the necessary risks to become great.
- The flower doesn’t dream of the bee. It blossoms and the bee comes.
- Simple ain’t easy.
- Being afraid is a priceless education.

- Life begins just on the other side of your comfort zone.
- Don’t go where the path may lead. Go, instead, where there is no path and leave a trail.
- I start the day. The war begins. -Casting Crowns
- Like, I don’t know if I can come back from this. But, I’ll tell you what. I’m gonna die tryin’. -Kobe Bryant
- Take the road less traveled.
- I like the head mechanics that come with the 5K and 10K, but I like the grittiness of the Mile.
- If the fire is hot enough, anything will burn.
- This world is such a beautiful place. The only way I can fully respect and appreciate it is to be out in it…on it…running, moving, working, breathing, sweating.
- Long, grueling endurance events ignite feelings of excitement and adventure, along with a “survival mode” attitude. During them, when faced with uncertainty and doubt, the result is profound self-examination and discovery.
- Running is so attractive because we never know 100% what is going to happen out there, or how we will feel, or what we will see, feel, smell. It’s a relentless pursuit of sensual curiosity.
- No matter your goals, there is no time frame to reach them. No limit. Your whole life is the time range. Goals may change over time due to injury or circumstance, but you should never stray from being THE BEST YOU THAT YOU CAN BE, every day. Period.
- Respect the mountain. Respect the hills. Respect the distance. The speed. The grind. The task.
- You never “conquer” the mountain. You are just permitted to stand on it. -John Muir
- A man can be himself only if he’s alone. And if he does not love solitude, he does not love freedom. For it is only when he is alone that he is truly free.
- I can crack any Da Vinci code out there.
- One of my biggest fears in life is being unprepared. If I’m unprepared, doubt will creep into my mind.
- I’m a competitor, but in the sport of long-distance running and endurance events, it’s different. I’m not going out there every day with aggression, rage, and the “juices” flowing. No. Those emotions reveal themselves when I compete within myself on workout days, days when I feel tired, against the clock, and, above all, in competition. I’m a silent killer out there. During the everyday run in nature, I try to slow everything down and take in the freedom and beauty of it all one step, one foot placement, one breath, one root at a time.
- Sometimes, all it takes is a single, solid, hard, honest, sweaty effort endured over a couple hours. One amazing session, one full day of regimented training, and it all comes back to you.
- There is no way to be 100% prepared for an ultra. In training, you do your best with the time you put into it and you’ll arrive at the start line confident in your abilities. But, there is always a certain portion of the race where the unknown comes into play and the race/environment/loneliness will test your mental and spiritual fortitude, even more than the physical.
- This is the hidden aspect of mountain running that hikers or even road/track runners can never understand and will never know about. It is the ineffable secret of those who have diligently paid their dues and over time become intimate confidants with a landscape that, to many, typically only represents an obstacle to be conquered. Why, the hikers will ask, do you run these beautiful trails? Aren’t you afraid of missing the views, the scenery? The road runners will claim, I don’t want to sprain an ankle, scrape a knee, or thrash about at 12 minute pace when I can cruise the black-top hitting six minute miles with a perfect rhythm. The answer, of course, is that, for me at least, the sheer felt kinesthetic sensation of a stretch of well-run trail unquestionably trumps the quality of any of those other experiences. When things are going well – when they’re clicking on that unconscious, unforceable, primal plane of existence where every fiber is preternaturally aligned to the task of effortlessly traversing ground –there is a sense of everything being in its exact right place, right here, right now. It’s as if I am the leading star in my own life and at that moment I’m absolutely nailing the role. To me, that type of experience is unassailable in its value. And it doesn’t happen while hiking. Or fighting cars for a section of pavement. It seems to require rocks, roots, and a significant gradient. -Anton Krupicka
- The only way to put perspective on my attitude while riding my bike this far is to relate the unfortunate fact that due to injury sustained through running, I was unable to run AT ALL for over a month. That’s right, from mid-August until “four to six weeks” after mid-August (according to the exorbitantly-expensive doctors I saw), I was forbidden from running a step. And since I have rarely been accused of being patient or reasonable, my attitude in the month prior to my bike tour was so bad as to be unrelatable. Suffice it to say that just about anything would be an improvement. I guess what I mean is that it’s never so bad that it can’t get worse, but the thing about attitude is that it’s sort of up to each of us to decide how we feel, which sounds like the kind of uncharacteristically-reasonable perspective that would just piss me right the hell off when my attitude is trending darkish. But that’s why I do my best to avoid perspective at all and just grind my emotions into exhaustion. Hence, a bike tour. -Dakota Jones
- One had to trick or seize or submit to the grace of each moment, which, except for those unexpected and sometimes well-deserved moments when consciousness and grace came together were usually occasions of some mystery. The pleasure of speaking in public was the sensitivity it offered: with every phrase one was better or worse, close or less close to the existential promise of truth, it feels true, which hovers on good occasions like a presence between speaker and audience. Sometimes one was better, and worse, at the same moment; so strategic choices on the continuation of the attack would soon have to be decided, a moment to know the blood of the gambler in oneself.
- Runners, like painters, gardeners, musicians, and rock-climbers, emphasize the process over the product. That process is autotelic, where the activity itself is the reward.
- Once I start having dreams about running and, in particular, racing (whether it’s a good or bad dream), that’s when I know I am focused.
- Running should be light, minimal, and efficient.
- The more time we spend in the mountains, the more we know its moods…and the more we are physically and mentally prepared to deal with it. The mountain teaches our insignificance as well as our agency. In this search, with this accumulated knowledge, there are times when the borders blur between landscape and self…between human and mountain. When the integration of self in place feels seamless, THAT is when the mountains truly become home. -Anton Krupicka
- My abilities and talents are God’s gift to me. What I do with them is my gift back to God.
- Don’t judge the journey before it’s over. See what the end will be. If you trust His promise, you have to trust the path. It might be winding. It might be confusing. It might not feel good. But He is there in the details. He is with you, even in this moment. He can be found at the dead ends…when you used to hope, and now it’s hard to hope…that’s where He meets you. It starts in the heart. You keep trying to make sense of things in your life with your head. You keep trying to figure out the reason for what’s happening to you. And when you can’t figure out the reason, you wanna jump off the road. You wanna stop following. You wanna stop trusting when you can’t figure it out. But if you would reverse the search, and believe in your heart what you have not yet seen with your eyes, and believe the goodness of God…this journey starts with faith, not making sense. “God, I don’t get this. But I’m going forward.”
- He’s known as this light and free lifestyle. But, what I can say is that underneath he is a man of very strong convictions. He knows what he wants. He focuses on doing it. He really tries to live according to his own principles.
- I’m just a beer elf at work.
- I embrace the solitariness in myself.
- It’s better to be 10% undertrained than 1% overtrained.
- The past…elementary school, middle school, high school, college…BLOW IT ALL UP….because all that matters is what you do NEXT.
- Each day is a new day to become who you set out to be. It’s never too late to become who you were born to be.
- Delay gratification. Be OK with that. Don’t be weak and accept quick pleasures.
- Hope is the beating of your heart.
- Everyone strives to build themselves to be perfect. The main goal seems to be getting serious about your craft and bettering yourself in what you do on a daily basis. However, it is very hard to maintain this level of discipline, mentally and physically. Only the GREAT ones make it through.
- Constantly, continue to learn. Continue to ask questions. Continue to figure things out. Continue to ask why things happen a certain way. Continue to better yourself. Because when that happens, you have no choice but to achieve greatness. Greatness comes as a bi-product of that. So, continue to challenge yourself. -Kobe Bryant
- Create your own story. Be epic and unique with a calm confidence.
- It takes 10,000 hours of practice to become a master of your craft.
- If you wanna build a legacy, you have to do it from scratch…from the ground floor upwards. All by yourself. You don’t have to follow and copy other athletes that are successful. When you become successful, YOUR own way will be embraced and you will be respected.
- When I am injured, and it happens to be a gorgeous day outside, I get even more pissed…I could be out there happily suffering…but, NOPE, I’m stuck inside.
- Every person has their own story. Each are equally important. They all come together to form what is known as life.
- Nothing is respected more than someone with a dream who wakes up every day and tries to make it reality.
- Life is what you make of it. It’s not about where you are. It’s about who you’re with. Surround yourself with people who make you a happier and better person. Or, be alone, if that makes you experience freedom.
- You CAN run faster than your level of fitness. You may think that running as fast as you are fit is the fastest you can go, but that is not the truth. Developing strategies and mental/physical pain-coping mechanisms for during the race combined with a smart and EXECUTED race plan is the key to running better than your level of fitness. It’s possible!
- I can never get too cocky or confident in my running because I know that I am prone to injury and one little twinge usually leads to an injury or setback. My happiness will run dry and I will get depressed…so, I need other avenues and healthy pursuits to keep my spirits up when the setbacks come my way.
- The world is full of noise…clicking of pens, people gossiping, doors slamming, bills to be paid, homework to be submitted, gas tanks to be filled…it’s nice to know that there are still places that have been untouched…places where the only noises are the animals, leaves, and wind blowing.
- Classical music keeps me in the right state of mind and drowns out the distractions.
- Each season and training program is a journey, constantly evolving to fit my needs. No training program is perfect, although I will strive for it.
- Ice bathing should occur only when you are trying to restore the body for an event/race by reducing inflammation…NOT when you are enhancing your conditioning. Inflammation during this buildup time is GOOD! The body needs to adapt to improve.
- Relax then attack.
- In that moment, his courage shone through and his love conquered his greed and his heart conquered his fear.
- Amnesia…euphoria.
- …suffering produces perseverance; perseverance produces character; and character produces hope. And hope does not disappoint… -Romans 3:5
- Love wins.
- Good Beer Wins. -Greenbush
- I often struggle trying to connect the dots and understanding the “why” of life. I’m not sure if I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. However, so many stars needed to align to be writing this now, and looking back, without the failure and without the struggle it wouldn’t have been possible. It can be a difficult world to navigate at times—keep hope, learn and grow from the challenges, and embrace the good in yourself and those around you. -Rob Krar

- The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
but I have promises to keep,
and miles to go before I sleep,
and miles to go before I sleep. -Robert Frost - You can’t be a leader without being a student first.
- Unforgiving. Determined. Unapologetic.
- When nothing seems to help, I go look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet, at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before.
- We could always kinda be average or just be what’s normal. I’m not in this to do what’s normal. It’s a decision that you gotta make if you wanna accomplish anything significant. And to have a serious impact you gotta make sacrifices and make that choice. I made that choice a long time ago. We all have shit that we go through. We all have things that…obstacles that are in our way at some point or another. We all have doubt. But when we chose, we chose. -Kobe Bryant
- Greatness. It’s just something we made up. Somehow, we’ve come to believe that greatness is a gift…reserved for a chosen few…for prodigies…for superstars…and the rest of us can only stand by, watching. You can forget that. Greatness is not some rare DNA strand. It’s not some precious thing. Greatness is no more unique to us than breathing. We’re all capable of it. All of us.
- Everything in life happens for a reason. God has a plan. Everything you do is part of your journey. It’s who you are. Everything you have done in the past is engraved in you. You always hold on to the miles and trials you endured. When you make a mistake, do not hold your head low. The mistake was meant to happen. Trust in God with all your heart and keep moving forward while holding true to the same faith and focus you started with. Strive for perfection and always remember why you do it.
